The New Desperados began as a screenplay many, many years ago. 35+ years. At one point, Bill Duke, the actor/director wanted to direct it after his movie Hoodlum. That still feels surreal to write. Back then, I thought it was a crime story about two brothers from Ontario fighting back after a factory collapse.

But time changed the story.

It became less about outlaws and more about faith, God, ego, and spiritual blindness. It became about Charlie following his older brother Smiley, a funny, fearless megalomaniac, into darkness because he loved him and believed in him. And it became about Magdalena, whose faith shows Charlie the difference between revenge and grace.

It started as a movie.

It became a confession.
