Notable self-published romantasy of 2026
Arguably the best part of what we do at Written (besides helping authors sells their books directly) is… reading. On any given day, our team reads. A lot. And since we are a platform for self-published authors, it’s no secret that we have a soft spot for independent titles.
With the release of Threshing Day and the upcoming launch of A Court of Splintered Harmony, this month all eyes are on romantasy. And since self-published authors have made a significant contribution to this genre, we couldn’t miss out on making a list of the notable independent romantasy releases of 2026.
Here it comes:
Mila Finch’s Runebreaker
In January this year, Mila Finch self-published Runebreaker — “a steamy, fast-paced romantasy with forced proximity” — reaching 50 million+ pages read in a matter of a few months. Fast forward, it was traditionally published in hardcover by Bloom Books, hitting the shelves of major retailers like Indigo. It’s also going international, with secured translation deals in 13 languages.
H.M. Wolfe’s Daggermouth
Daggermouth is the year’s most talked-about self-published book (if you don’t believe me, ask our chronically online community manager). TikTok has been going crazy over this dark dystopian romance with high spice levels, enemies-to-lovers and FMC tropes, and Simon & Schuster paid seven figures in February for it and its sequel.
Anavrin Jay’s The Blood Plagues
This dark gothic romantasy (called “traumantasy” by some readers) was initially distributed to BookTok and Bookstagram bloggers as Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs). When the UK-based author self-published The Blood Plagues to the public, glowing Goodreads reviews attracted the attention of traditional publishers.
Key takeaway? Self-publish your books!

The next major romantasy title might be coming from Written. Will it be yours? ;)
