    Description

Beth is the lifeguard at Rose Lake Camp, where the lake is rented out to different groups all summer long. But something is blooming in Rose Lake — something old. Older than Beth's grandmother Ruth, who has seen it before, forty-nine years ago. Grandma Ruth says it has bloomed every forty-nine years since forever ago.
When it blooms, the fish swim in strange formations. Loons start laying translucent eggs on the sand. Moss beds burst with flowers that have no name. And the insects sing.
It is the last week of summer. One more camp to go. Pastor Bob arrives with his Evangelical youth group, full of faith and certainty.
But what lives in Rose Lake is older than the camp. Older than the church. Older than people.
    Maybe older than God.
