Are books DRM-free? If it's real ownership, can readers open them on Kobo, Kindle, or Onyx devices?

Think of buying a book on Written like buying a physical book in a bookstore. When a reader purchases a book, they’re not just receiving a file—they’re gaining exclusive rights, bought directly from the author, to access and read that book through our app.

This isn’t traditional DRM, which typically locks files to specific devices or vendors. Instead, our system is built around real digital ownership: each book is securely linked to its buyer, preventing piracy while enabling features like reselling and transparent royalty payments.

Because of this unique approach, books can currently only be read within the Written ecosystem—not yet on external e-readers like Kobo or Kindle. This protects both authors and readers by ensuring fair compensation, secure ownership, and a seamless reading experience.

However, if external platforms begin to support our encryption standards in the future, readers will be able to access their purchased books there as well.
