I am a systems engineer by trade, and I have spent my career in the unmanned space program. I worked on landers that tipped over on rocks the size of dinner plates. I worked on rovers that outlived their warranty by a factor of sixty. I have been in the room Mars when the telemetry flatlined, and I have been in the room when a photograph came back showing ancient riverbeds carved into a desert that has not seen liquid water in three billion years. This trilogy is the story of that chain.

The first book you are holding, First Light, is about the runners who never left Earth. They sent robots instead, and those robots taught us how to walk on a planet that kills machines as casually as weather kills insects here. The second book will be about the planners, the architects, the ones who took the map the robots made and tried to design a city on top of it. The third book will be about the settlers themselves, the ones who discovered that no plan survives contact with reality, and that the bitter truth of Mars is also the most beautiful thing they ever touched.
