The Game Issue 1: Chapter One, The First Humans
After the road from the Singers' world has lain dark for eleven days, a lyre-shaped Singer ship comes through it the wrong way, humming a single note — and the six Taken Singers who step down its ramp are wrong in a way no one has seen before: the gathering went into them the wrong way round, and the frightened primates of a small rim world called Earth are still inside them, singing different songs. In the Gatehouse on Judah, where nine of the twelve seats stand cold, the remnants of three peoples — Anah the Elder, Corin of the Forge, and Senn of the Swift — must decide what to do with a species that cannot be taken. Senn would hide behind Earth like a fortress; Corin would bottle Earth's gift and dose it into Judah's children; Anah offers a third door: give everything the twelve worlds ever learned into the primate line, and pay the price — do it once, blind, close the road, melt the steering oar, and watch, and never reach. The sowing goes down to Earth as a slow rain of light, and the long watch begins. To save them is not to own them.
