The history of Australia stretches back over 60,000 years, beginning with the arrival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who developed rich cultures, languages, and spiritual traditions deeply connected to the land. In 1770, British explorer James Cook claimed the eastern coast for Britain, naming it New South Wales. Eighteen years later, the First Fleet arrival established a penal colony at Sydney Cove, marking the beginning of European settlement. Throughout the 19th century, Australia expanded through exploration, agriculture, and the gold rushes of the 1850s, which brought rapid population growth and economic development. Separate colonies formed across the continent, each with its own government.
