Description
The Grenadier Guards are the most senior infantry regiment of the British Army and form part of the Guards Division. Originally raised in 1656 as Lord Wentworth’s Regiment during the English Civil War, they later became the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards.
Today they are known for both frontline operational service and ceremonial duties at locations such as Buckingham Palace. The regiment has served in major conflicts including the Crimean War, both World Wars, and modern deployments such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
They are instantly recognisable by their red tunics and tall bearskin hats worn during ceremonial guard duties in London. Based at Wellington Barracks near Buckingham Palace, they also train for active deployment and maintain rigorous military readiness. As part of the Household Division, they regularly take part in public ceremonies such as Trooping the Colour.
Their motto, Nulli Secundus, means second to none and reflects their long tradition of elite service. Recruits undergo demanding training before joining one of Britain’s most prestigious and historic regiments.
They continue to represent the monarchy and the British Army at state events and on ceremonial occasions worldwide while maintaining active operational capability across multiple theatres and support roles in the modern era.
