    Description

The NASA Space Transportation System (STS), better known as the Space Shuttle program, was a groundbreaking series of missions that operated from 1981 to 2011. Designed as a reusable spacecraft, the shuttle combined elements of a rocket, spacecraft, and glider, aiming to make space travel more routine and cost-effective. The first mission, STS-1, launched aboard Space Shuttle Columbia, marking the beginning of a new era in human spaceflight.

Across 135 missions, shuttles such as Space Shuttle Discovery and Space Shuttle Atlantis carried astronauts, satellites, and scientific experiments into orbit. The program played a key role in deploying the Hubble Space Telescope and helping construct the International Space Station, essentially building a floating laboratory piece by piece.

Despite its achievements, the STS program faced tragedy. The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster and the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster highlighted the risks of spaceflight and led to major safety reforms.

The final mission, STS-135, closed the program. Though retired, the STS missions reshaped space exploration, leaving a legacy of innovation, international cooperation, and scientific discovery.
