Hank Leyvas and Sleepy Lagoon: A Chicano Civil Rights Moment examines one of the most important and disturbing civil-rights cases in Los Angeles history. In 1942, the death of José Díaz led authorities to arrest hundreds of Mexican American youths and prosecute twenty-two defendants in a racially charged mass trial. Henry “Hank” Leyvas became the central figure in a case shaped by prejudice, sensational newspaper coverage, and assumptions about Mexican American youth.
The book recounts the Sleepy Lagoon trial, the work of the Sleepy Lagoon Defense Committee, and the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots. It reveals how clothing, neighborhood identity, and ethnicity were used to portray young Mexican Americans as criminals before their guilt had been proven. Families, attorneys, labor organizers, journalists, and civil-liberties advocates organized a national campaign demanding justice for Leyvas and his fellow defendants.
In October 1944, the California Court of Appeal reversed the convictions after determining that serious errors had denied the defendants a fair trial. Their victory became an important early chapter in the struggle for Chicano civil rights. Written by Armando Oscar Olmos and Maria Teresa Zambrano Rivera, this book honors the people who resisted injustice and explains how Sleepy Lagoon helped prepare the way for the Chicano Movement.
